There’s no doubt that India is a major market for technology. While the country has its own brand preferences outside of the world’s usual, everyone still wants to get a piece of the market. To the dismay of global companies, the country is realizing the potential of its own market. Effective immediately, India has started restricting imports for new laptops, tablets, and PCs.

Recently, India made some headlines in the smartphone industry. A few companies, including Apple, have poured funds into building factories in India. Locally produced devices will allow these companies to attract the Indian market better. With the new regulations out today, it looks like these brands are going to enjoy a head start over others who aren’t in the country yet.

The Indian government introduced a new restriction (via Reuters) against the importation of “laptops, tablets, all-in-one personal computers, and ultra-small form factor computers and servers” made from other countries. Customers, however, will get an exemption. Airline passengers can still bring in these devices in their luggage. Additionally, a single imported device is allowable when bought through e-commerce platforms. Companies can import their products only by applying for a special license.

In a nutshell, bulk orders without a license are out. The government is instead encouraging users to buy locally produced products as part of its “Make in India” program. At the very least, it’s not a total ban on foreign brands. For example, Dell, HP, and Lenovo are exempt from the regulations since they already have production facilities built in the country.

Attacking a huge smartphone market is difficult. With preferences constantly evolving, it can get tricky to figure out the best lineup to capture most of a market. Samsung, however, has just done it. In the last quarter of 2022, Samsung has taken the crown from Xiaomi as the bestselling smartphone brand in India.

India is an important market for most smartphone brands. It’s one of the largest markets in the world. However, despite its size, the biggest players are often those who offer more affordable devices for consumers. Budget is the name of the game if a brand wants to make it big in the country.

Things are changing, though. According to new market data (via Reuters), Samsung has nabbed the throne from the former leader, Xiaomi. In the last quarter of 2022, the Korean brand grabbed 20 percent of the market, while the latter only got 18 percent.

In a trend dubbed as premiumization, Indian consumers are reportedly enjoying more disposable income, resulting in more willingness to buy pricier products. Additionally, the report hints that consumers have started equating lower prices with inferior quality.

With the market trending towards more premium products, Samsung took the lead with a lineup that consists more of midrange to premium devices. It will also be interesting to see if Apple, an even more premium brand, can also make a dent in the Indian market.

Apple is preparing to open its first stores in India https://www.gadgetmatch.com/apple-job-listings-india-first-store/ Mon, 09 Jan 2023 20:24:34 +0000 https://www.gadgetmatch.com/?p=151451 Based on new job listings

The post Apple is preparing to open its first stores in India appeared first on GadgetMatch.

]]>
For one of the largest smartphone markets in the world, India is one of the rarer countries where Apple does not outright dominate. Undoubtedly, the company is trying to change that. Ongoing job listings in India are suggesting that Apple is ready to open its first brick-and-mortar store in the country.

First reported by Financial Times, Apple has posted job openings in India for several retail roles including for the iconic Genius Bar. Another clue even indicates that some spots have already been filled ahead of time. A few employees in the country have reportedly posted about their new jobs on LinkedIn.

Unfortunately, none of the job listings show how many stores are planned and where they will be. Narrowing things down by a bit, a few of the confirmed employees are from Mumbai and New Delhi. The report also does not indicate when the stores will open. However, since a few have already been hired, a grand opening might be coming soon.

Apple has a lot to gain by strengthening its foothold in India. The country is an important stronghold for smartphone companies. However, the company might find things harder as time goes by. The country recently dictated that brands must switch to USB-C if they want to sell their devices in India. All over the world, Apple remains the last stalwart against adopting the more universal standard.

India to enforce USB-C on all phones by 2024 https://www.gadgetmatch.com/india-usb-c-2025-apple/ Mon, 02 Jan 2023 21:16:28 +0000 https://www.gadgetmatch.com/?p=151279 Smartphones and wearables affected

]]>
Last year, the European Union made a lot of waves by announcing the impending enforcement of USB-C across all devices sold in the region. Other countries, such as Brazil, joined in by pondering its own version of the same policy. Then, as 2022 wound to a definitive close, India, skipping a more deliberative phase, has announced a sweeping enforcement of USB-C coming in 2025.

In approximately two years’ time, most devices sold within India must use USB-C ports (via Business Standard). More specifically, Indian lawmakers have included smartphones and wearables as part of the new policy. Like policies in other countries, India’s policy revolves around the drive to reduce e-waste from devices.

Naturally, as is the case in other countries, Apple is the brand most affected by the ruling. While most Android-based smartphones already use USB-C across the board, Apple’s device still rely on the proprietary Lightning cable, severing a significant chunk of the populating from the more universal standard.

The country is nothing to shrug off, either. India is one of the largest smartphone markets in the world. Though Android is much more prevalent than Apple, India’s new policy is certainly a significant speed bump for the iPhone maker.

Though Apple has publicly protested against the new policies, the company has also confirmed that it will comply with the new rules. While it has a slightly lengthier timeframe in India, the brand has to comply in the European Union by the end of 2024.

It’s the world versus Apple. After years and years of proprietary hardware, Apple is finally facing a deluge of pressure to abandon the Lightning cable. The entire European Union have already decided to force device markers, particularly Apple, to adopt the universal standard, USB-C. Now, another country is joining in: India.

As reported by Mint, the Indian government has started holding exploratory talks with manufacturers to discuss the possibility of a common charging standard. While the talks aren’t decisive yet, it’s the first step towards legislation moving in favor of a standard.

Though the wording remains vague, a lot of pressure is on Apple. The iPhone maker is still one of the biggest opponents against adopting USB-C worldwide. Amid the company’s growing gallery of USB-C devices, the Lightning cable is still alive and well. A lot of other manufacturers have already moved on to the standard for its their ports.

Soon, the company might not have a choice. If a decisive law is passed, India will join the European Union and Brazil in potentially forcing Apple into the standard. It’s not an insignificant ally for the pro-USB-C camp, either. India is one of the biggest smartphone markets in the world.

Apple is unlikely to launch a USB-C iPhone series this year. The company is already expected to launch the next series in a few weeks’ time. If such a phone is coming, it might debut as soon as next year.

It has a signature Samsung design that we’ve seen on a lot of other F-branded phones. While the looks are conventional, it aims to cover up by offering as many features as possible. Despite intense competition from players like Xiaomi, realme, and vivo, Samsung has managed to hold onto its fort, unbudged.

Although the charging brick included with the phone is rated for 15W only, so you’ll have to buy a faster charger adapter separately. The fingerprint scanner is located on the side for authentication. It ships with Android 11-based One UI 3.1 out-of-the-box.

The post Mi Watch Revolve Active is a premium fitness tracker with 14 days battery appeared first on GadgetMatch.

]]>
The Mi Watch Revolve was launched last year, and it sits in a comfortable spot — not too expensive, but loaded. Now, the brand’s expanding its offering and bringing in a much more fitness-oriented product dubbed the Mi Watch Revolve Active.

As the name suggests, the watch is designed to keep you outdoors as much as possible. Or in the new normal, as active and fit as possible. It has a far more sturdy build and continues the premium design language.

It has a 1.4-inch AMOLED display with an always-on display, eliminating the need to touch the screen just to view the time or other essential details. In addition, the screen is protected by Gorilla Glass 3 and weighs just 32 grams.

The fitness front comes equipped with LifeQ Health algorithm, which analyzes more than 30 key data points like blood oxygen, stress, heart rate, sleep quality, energy levels, calories burned, and more. All these data points are leveraged to process your lifestyle, fitness regime, and overall performance.

Together, these data points deliver more accurate blood oxygen levels (SpO2), sleep cycles, real-time heart rate, stress levels, body’s oxygen consumption (Vo2 Max), and calories burned. In addition, more than 117 workout modes are supported, including triathlons, swimming, HIIT, Boxing, Water sports, and Yoga.

GPS tracking features an Airoha GPS chip that supports GPS, GLONASS, Galileo, and BDS navigation systems.  Simple operations will be far simpler when you summon Alexa, as the watch supports the voice assistant for reminders, alarms, and other instructions.

The Mi Watch Revolve Active is water-resistant up to 50 meters and comes pre-installed with basic apps like alarm, timer, stopwatch, weather, find my phone, flashlight. It connects to the phone via Xiaomi’s Wear App and has a mini-store for watch faces, which has more than 100 options right now.

Lastly, Xiaomi says the watch can deliver up to 14 days of battery life on a single charge. If you toggle the long battery mode, it can stretch up to 22 days. While these numbers may seem inflated, Xiaomi has an irrefutable history of delivering solid numbers in the real world.

Price and availability:

The Mi Watch Revolve Active is priced at INR 9,999, and sales start from June 25. It’ll be up for purchase via Amazon, Mi.com, and other partner stores. It comes in Beige, Black, and Navy Blue watch case options, with six strap color options, including Black, Blue, Green, White, and Purple.

The second wave of Coronavirus has eased in India, and the country is gradually opening up. A few brands decided to avoid any new launches amid the raging pandemic, creating a vacuum in an otherwise fast-paced industry. Thankfully, Xiaomi has returned with a new offering, and it’s called the Mi 11 Lite.

The Mi 11 series is designed to offer a more premium experience without making a huge dent in your pocket. It follows the same design language as the Mi 11X but is far more thinner and light. At just 6.8mm thickness and 157g weight, it’s touted to be the lightest phone of 2021 so far.

On the front, its got a 6.5-inch AMOLED screen with Full HD+ resolution, a 90Hz refresh rate, and Gorilla Glass 5 protection. In addition, to make the phone lighter, Xiaomi incorporated a “flat flexible OLED” and a redesigned circuit board that is 35 percent smaller than conventional ones.

Powering the Mi 11 Lite is a Snapdragon 732G processor with up to 8GB RAM and expandable storage. A side-mounted physical fingerprint scanner is included for authentication, and there are dual speakers with Hi-Res Audio support.

The rear sports a triple camera setup consisting of a 64-megapixel primary sensor, an 8-megapixel wide-angle lens, and a 5-megapixel telephoto sensor. There’s a 16-megapixel selfie camera that is housed in a punch-hole cut-out. The software supports AI Beautify, Night mode, Time burst, and much more.

Backing these internals is a 4250mAh battery with 33W fast charging. The brand claims the battery has an endurance rating of more than 100 hours, and the compatible fast charger is bundled along. The Mi 11 Lite is IP53-certified for minor dust and water splashes.

The Mi 11 Lite is priced at INR 21,999 (US$ 300) for the 6GB+128GB option and INR 23,999 (US$ 325) for 8GB+256GB. It’s available in three color options — Jazz Blue, Tuscany Coral, and Vinyl Black. Airtel starts 5G trials in India, shows off 1Gbps speed https://www.gadgetmatch.com/airtel-starts-5g-trials-in-india-shows-off-1gbps-speed/ Tue, 15 Jun 2021 11:03:16 +0000 https://www.gadgetmatch.com/?p=125379 Commercial availability still a year away, though

The post Airtel starts 5G trials in India, shows off 1Gbps speed appeared first on GadgetMatch.

]]>
India is yet to roll out 5G services, but there’s finally some good news. Airtel has kicked off its 5G trial network in Gurugram, Delhi’s neighboring city,  just a little over a month after the government gave its go-ahead to carry out trial runs.

Airtel is testing its 5G network at a speed of over 1Gbps, and the site where the trial is running is operating in the 3500MHz band. According to a report by ET Telecom, Airtel has been allotted the 5G trial spectrum in 3500 MHz, 28 GHz, and 700 MHz.

Rival telcos Jio and VIL (Vodafone-Idea) have been allotted spectrums in the 700 MHz, 3.5 GHz, and 26 GHz bands. State-backed telco MTNL has also received permission to start trials. The runs are being carried out in compliance with the guidelines of the Department of Telecommunications (DoT).

Airtel is currently working with Ericson on the equipment, while other providers include Nokia, Samsung, etc. Jio has announced will be conducting trials using its own indigenous technology. The trails shall go on for six months. Chinese companies like Huawei have long been sidelined.

5G in India

The Indian government is yet to auction the 5G spectrum; hence a commercial roll-out is at least a year away. Earlier in January this year, Airtel claimed that they had become the first telco in India to demonstrate 5G services over a commercial network in Hyderabad. However, these are internal runs.

It noted that in Hyderabad, users were able to download a full-length movie in a matter of seconds on a 5G phone, a demonstration that has underlined the company’s technology capabilities.

The plans to unveil 5G in the country took a backseat due to the Coronavirus pandemic. The industry couldn’t adopt the latest technology quickly as the market was devastated by low tariff wars, pending tax issues, and reducing capex. VIL was barely able to survive bankruptcy, but the debt continues to haunt it.

The Nord CE follows its predecessor’s design language and the Blue Void color option screams OnePlus. It looks quite similar to the Xiaomi Mi A3 but has an elongated vertical camera array on the rear. The phone will be going up against the Redmi Note 10 Pro Max, Mi 10i 5G, and realme X7.

It sports a 6.4-inch AMOLED display with a 90Hz refresh rate, Full HD+ resolution, and a punch-hole cut-out. The body is made of polycarbonate, and there’s an in-display fingerprint scanner for authentication. Powering the phone is a Snapdragon 750G processor with up to 8GB RAM and 256GB internal storage. Unfortunately, there’s no SD card slot for memory expansion.

On the rear is a triple camera setup consisting of a 64-megapixel primary camera, an 8-megapixel wide-angle lens, and a 2-megapixel macro sensor. For selfies, there is a 16-megapixel shooter located within the cut-out. Further, it comes preloaded with Nightscape, UltraShot HDR, Portrait, Panorama, Pro mode, and Smart Scene recognition. Backing these internals is a 4500mAh battery with 30W fast charging.

The Nord CE 5G costs INR 22,999 (US$ 315) for the 6GB + 128GB option, INR 24,999 (US$ 340) for 8GB + 128GB, and INR 27,999 (US$ 382) for 8GB + 256GB. The phone goes on sale on June 16, and color options include Blue Void, Charcoal Ink, and Silver Ray. WhatsApp is suing India’s government over rules that endanger privacy https://www.gadgetmatch.com/whatsapp-suing-indian-government/ Wed, 26 May 2021 12:48:15 +0000 https://www.gadgetmatch.com/?p=124445 It's serious when WhatsApp starts talking about privacy...

The post WhatsApp is suing India’s government over rules that endanger privacy appeared first on GadgetMatch.

]]>
It’s hard to imagine a Facebook-backed service talk about defending privacy. The company has a nasty reputation for handling users’ data, and it’s often considered a dystopian internet giant. But Facebook-owned WhatsApp is now suing the Indian government over new rules that endanger user privacy.

In February, the Indian government introduced new guidelines to regulate content on social media and streaming platforms. The new rules give greater power to monitor online activity, including encrypted apps like Signal and Telegram.

To be more precise, the government wants apps like WhatsApp to identify the originator of a message. The content of the message can remain encrypted, but the user should be traceable. The new rules supersede the existing law — the IT Act. Hence, it becomes impossible for the government to enforce traceability without a law.

And, even if the rule is modeled within the existing law, it’ll pose a massive challenge for encrypted apps. Giving up traceability potentially compromises all its users. WhatsApp says traceability of texts would force companies to collect and store billions of messages sent each day for the sole purpose of turning them over to law enforcement.

WhatsApp’s petition asks the High Court to declare that one of the new rules is a violation of privacy under the constitution of India since it requires social media sites to identify the “first originator of information” when asked for it.

The instant messaging app has over 400 million users in India. Platforms like Twitter, Facebook, and Whatsapp were given three months to comply with these rules. Although it’s suing the government, WhatsApp itself has received a lot of criticism due to its recently updated privacy policy.

“Some governments are seeking to force technology companies to find out who sent a particular message on private messaging services. This concept is called ‘traceability’,” said WhatsApp in an online statement. “WhatsApp is committed to doing all we can to protect the privacy of people’s personal messages, which is why we join others in opposing traceability.”

The post Indian police visits Twitter India office, finds it closed and empty appeared first on GadgetMatch.

]]>
In a bizarre turn of events, Delhi Police visited Twitter India’s office to serve a notice but had to return without finishing the important mission because the office was closed due to the pandemic. All employees are working from home, and the police visit served no purpose.

“The Delhi police team went to the Twitter office to serve a notice to Twitter, as a part of a routine process. This was necessitated as we wanted to ascertain who is the right person to serve a notice, as replies by Twitter India MD have been very ambiguous,” the Delhi Police statement read.

The police entered the picture after the social media platform tagged a tweet from Sambit Patra, who holds no elected office but is the spokesperson of Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP). The party currently has a mandate and runs the Indian government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Patra’s tweet was tagged as “manipulated media” by Twitter last week after claiming that opposition parties had conspired to pressure the government amid a second Coronavirus wave. The opposition party, Indian National Congress (INC), created a document that detailed how the party workers should respond to SOS calls from the public.

BJP claims the document listed tips on how to discredit the government. It also asked workers to prioritize help requests from “friendly” media personnel and help only those who tag the INC’s youth handle. It isn’t known whether the document is legitimate or a work of fiction.

When Patra shared a picture of the same document, it was tagged as manipulated media. It’s worth noting that none of the parties can prove the document’s authenticity or whether the image shared on Twitter is doctored.

Despite the lack of proof, Twitter proceeded to tag a tweet as manipulated media, and Delhi Police went on to serve a notice, in turn. In the end, the police became a laughing stock since it tried a very conventional approach of law enforcement in a fully digital world.

This isn’t the first time Twitter has come under fire from the government, and the two have been unable to find a resolution. The Indian government is keen on regulating social media giants but fails to find a viable process. In February, for example, the government ordered Twitter to take down many accounts when protests against the new farm laws were escalating.

On the front, it has a 6.4-inch AMOLED display with Full HD+ resolution with a standard 60Hz refresh rate. Powering the phone is a Mediatek Helio G95 processor, coupled with Mali-G76 MC4 GPU. It supports expandable storage via a dedicated microSD card slot.

POCO has announced it will extend the warranty of smartphones in India by two months. If your phones warranty is expiring in May or June, it’ll be extended up to July or August. The extension is free for all users in the country amid a raging second wave of Coronavirus.

India is going through its second wave of the fatal virus, and things are far from cooling down. Almost 350,000 new cases were detected on May 11, and its peak was just a week ago.

POCO also announced that no launches would be organized in May. “We are pausing our new launches as we hope for the situation to improve,” a statement read. Brands took a similar decision in 2020 since all service centres were inaccessible due to lockdowns.

To curb the spread, most states have announced a partial or strict lockdown. Restrictions on movement are high, and companies have been asked to go remote completely. Northern parts of the country are still coping with the oxygen shortage, and beds are hard to find in hospitals.

Amid the chaos, many brands like Lenovo and realme have suspended their launches. “India is going through a very challenging time, and our heart goes out to all in time of this crisis. We know the media has been awaiting the new ROG Flow X13 and Zephyrus line-up. However, keeping in view the current situation, Asus India has decided to cancel all upcoming PC and ROG launches,” Asus India Business Head Arnold Su said in a press statement.

After an excruciating wait, it’s official — PUBG Mobile is coming back to India. But this time, it’ll have a new name: Battlegrounds Mobile India with some added features, and an India-centric focus.

Krafton, the game’s developer, has announced it’ll be launching the Battlegrounds Mobile India soon. The game will bring an AAA-rated multiplayer experience alongside exclusive in-game events, tournaments, and leagues. While a launch date isn’t available, Krafton did confirm that pre-registration will be opened up soon.

The game will be free-to-play and incorporate the same battle royale concept that made it popular. Although, little detail is available about maps, guns, vehicles, and the plot (if there is any) of the game.

Furthermore, the game’s developer said that it would comply with all local laws and compliances. This includes data localization — storage of data within Indian borders. The announcement has cheered millions of players in the country who’ve been waiting for an alternative ever since the primary game was barred.

Why PUBG had to go

In mid-2020, India and China were involved in a fatal border skirmish that left many casualties on both sides. Following the conflict, India took a stringent anti-China stance and banned a host of apps that were developed or backed by Chinese companies. TikTok, owned by ByteDance, was among the first to come under the hammer.

PUBG Mobile was also included in the ban because Chinese giant Tencent was a distribution partner of the game. Following the ban, Krafton quickly removed Tencent from the agreement and announced plans to launch a new game independent of any Chinese influence.

Indian developers rode the hype wave, and many TikTok clones were touted as the next big thing. On the same lines, nCore Studios tried to bridge the gap by launching FAU-G, but it was a colossal failure. In fact, it still doesn’t have a battle royale mode, so it’s safe to assume Call of Duty: Mobile is the only practical alternative left for users right now.

The post India finally approves 5G trials, sidelines Chinese vendors appeared first on GadgetMatch.

]]>
The Indian government has allowed India’s top three telecom operators Jio, Airtel, and Vodafone-Idea to carry out 5G trials in India for six months. The telcos are barred from utilizing equipment from Chinese vendors.

The Department of Telecommunication (DoT) said that the telcos can rely on technology providers like South Korea’s Samsung, Swedish Ericsson, and Finnish Nokia. It also said that Jio was allowed to use its indigenous technology to carry out the trials. Huawei and ZTE are the two major Chinese companies that are affected by the clause.

For now, the mid-band (3.2Ghz to 3.67Ghz) and millimeter-wave band (24.25Ghz to 28.50Ghz) are available. Additionally, telcos are allowed to use their existing spectrum. The companies have been warned that commercial utilization is prohibited. The tests are divided between urban and rural India, and the security of the network is of utmost importance.

“The objectives of conducting 5G trials include testing 5G spectrum propagation characteristics especially in the Indian context; model tuning and evaluation of chosen equipment and vendors; testing of indigenous technology; testing of applications (such as tele-medicine, tele-education, augmented/ virtual reality, drone-based agricultural monitoring, etc.); and to test 5G phones and devices,” the ministry said.

No to China

The exclusion of Chinese vendors isn’t surprising as the government has maintained an anti-China stance since the mid of 2020. Due to escalating border crisis, more than a hundred Chinese apps including TikTok and PUBG: Mobile were banned. Since then, state-owned telecom operator BSNL is barred from sourcing Chinese equipment in its network. Private operators have followed a similar strategy to avoid heat from the government.

5G roll-out has been delayed in the country due to the ravaging Coronavirus pandemic and lack of demand for a premium market. The average revenue per user in India lowest in the world, making it difficult for companies to sustain amid decade-long tax disputes, discount wars, and expensive spectrum. However, the industry has picked up pace in the last year as the demand for wireless connectivity boomed, providing a much-needed buffer to beleaguered telcos like Vodafone-Idea.

]]>
Internet giant Google has announced it’ll be funding 250,000 doses of the COVAX vaccine via GAVI, the Vaccine Alliance. The funding shall come through Google.org, the company’s humanitarian foundation.

GAVI is a public-private partnership that aims to improve immunization drives in developing countries. It currently consists of developing economies, donor governments, World Health Organisation, UNICEF, and World Bank. Furthermore, private foundations such as Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation are also a part of the alliance.

Google will also be leading an employee-giving campaign to secure more vaccine vials with the GAVI Matching Fund and Google.org matching the donation to triple the impact. The Philippines will be a prime beneficiary of the proposal, along with Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, Indonesia, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, India, and Laos.

The Mountain View-based company will also offer its technology solution to the alliance to accelerate global distribution. The announcement comes at a crucial time because India is experiencing a miserable second wave of Coronavirus. Being a top vaccine maker, the surge in local cases has prompted India to intensify inoculation of its own citizens. Many experts are worried that this could disrupt vaccine supply to other countries, in turn, extending the pandemic and its associated risks.

“Since February, we’ve been providing vaccine-related insights to help GAVI better educate communities about the COVID-19 vaccine. They’ve used that information to create educational content that reaches more than half a million people each day. We’re now committing US$ 15 million in Ad Grants to help Gavi build on these efforts and amplify their fundraising campaign,” Karen DeSalvo, chief health officer at Google Health, in a blog post.

So far, the Philippines has provided more than 1.7 million doses, and 214,000 people are now vaccinated. While masks and social distancing are temporary measures, a vaccine is touted as the safest way to ensure a normal future devoid of lockdowns and stringent border controls.

realme postpones May 4 launch in India amid COVID-19 crisis https://www.gadgetmatch.com/realme-postpones-may-4-launch-in-india-amid-covid-19-crisis/ Thu, 29 Apr 2021 06:20:24 +0000 https://www.gadgetmatch.com/?p=123065 300,000 new cases are being detected every day

The post realme postpones May 4 launch in India amid COVID-19 crisis appeared first on GadgetMatch.

]]>
realme has announced it’ll be postponing its May 4 launch event due to the ongoing Coronavius-induced crisis in India. The Chinese brand was going to launch a host of new products, including a smart TV.

The launch is now postponed indefinitely, and realme will reveal a new date once the on-ground situation stabilizes. India has consistently added close to 300,000 new cases in the last week, and its healthcare infrastructure is struggling to keep up.

In a fresh tweet, realme India CEO, Madhav Sheth, has confirmed that the company is postponing upcoming launches and anniversary celebrations as India battles unprecedented challenges. He also urged everyone to follow Coronavirus safety measures like masking up, avoiding crowds, and maintaining social distance.

realme was expected to launch the Realme X7 Max and a 43-inch 4K smart TV. The former is said to be a rebranded realme GT Neo, which was unveiled in China recently.

Lockdown

Delhi and Mumbai, India’s primary hubs, are now under a severe lockdown aiming to curb the spread. realme hasn’t offered a new date since it’s impossible to gauge when the second wave ends. realme’s anniversary celebrations are held in May every year, which also stand canceled for now.

For now, industrial movement in the country has largely remained untouched. But sales have taken a massive hit as offline stores are entirely closed in many states like Maharashtra and Karnataka. Adding to this, many state governments have barred e-commerce delivery of non-essential goods, making it harder for people to buy new phones amid the restrictions.

Social networks like Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram have become critical tools for help in the absence of government authorities. Users are helping each other get hospital beds, oxygen cylinders, and medicines like Remedesivir. It won’t be an exaggeration to say that these platforms have turned into an unofficial Coronavirus helpline.

The post Mi 11X Pro launches with Snapdragon 888, 108MP camera appeared first on GadgetMatch.

]]>
After weeks of teasing, Xiaomi has finally unveiled the Mi 11X series, and it’ll be succeeding the Mi 10T series. Consisting of the Mi 11X Pro and the Mi 11X, the series will be going up against the vivo X60 series, realme GT, OnePlus 9 series, and OPPO Find X3 series.

The Mi 11X Pro sits between the ultra-premium range and midrange, offering best-in-class specifications that aren’t too heavy on the pocket. Unlike its predecessor, it’s much lighter now, coming in at 196g. The primary camera also has a halo ring that makes the lens easy to spot. It’s IP53 rated for dust and water protection.

On the front is a 6.7-inch AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate, Full HD resolution, Gorilla Glass 5 protection, and HDR10+ support. Under the hood is a Snapdragon 888 processor that’s backed by Adreno 660 GPU. There’s 8GB of RAM, and storage isn’t expandable.

The rear gets a triple-camera setup that includes a 108-megapixel primary sensor, an 8-megapixel wide-angle lens, and a 5-megapixel macro lens. Xiaomi says the new primary sensor leverages 9-in-1 2.1μm Super Pixel technology that produces better low-light images and retains details. On the front is a 20-megapixel front camera that’s located in a punch-hole cut-out.

Backing these internals is a slightly small 4520mAh battery that supports 33W fast charging. According to the brand, it can charge the phone fully in just 52 minutes. There’s no headphone jack in line with previous Mi-branded premium phones, and the fingerprint scanner is located on the side.

The Mi 11X Pro costs INR 39,999 (US$ 533) for the 8GB+128GB option and INR 41,999 (US$ 560) for the 8GB+256GB variant. Shipments start from May 3, and color options include Cosmic Black, Lunar White, and Magic Celestial Silver.

The Mi 11X, on the other hand, inherits a lot of features from the elder sibling. It has the same AMOLED display, design, battery, and even color options. But it’s powered by a Snapdragon 870 processor, and there’s an option with 6GB RAM. On the rear, it gets a 48-megapixel primary camera instead, while the other two sensors remain the same as the Mi 11X Pro.

It’s priced at INR 29,999 (US$ 400) for the 6GB+128GB option and 8GB+128GB goes for INR 31,999 (US$ 425). The sale starts on April 27 via Mi.com, Mi Stores, Amazon.in, and other offline partners.

Moto G60 and G40 Fusion launch with 120Hz screen, Snapdragon 732G https://www.gadgetmatch.com/moto-g60-g40-fusion-price-specs-india/ Wed, 21 Apr 2021 07:46:03 +0000 https://www.gadgetmatch.com/?p=122731 The price is genuinely surprising

The post Moto G60 and G40 Fusion launch with 120Hz screen, Snapdragon 732G appeared first on GadgetMatch.

Moto has always followed a laid-back approach to new launches and doesn’t get into aggressive marketing like Xiaomi or realme. It also doesn’t maintain a very attractive price point, often getting sidelined. Though, things are starting to change with the recently launched Moto G60 and the G40 Fusion.

The Moto G60 will go directly against the Redmi Note 10 Pro, the POCO X3 Pro, realme 7 Pro, and the Galaxy M31. It’s a very competitive market and Moto has a unique selling point — stock Android interface.

The two phones have a lot in common like a 6.8-inch LCD screen with a 120Hz refresh rate and punch-hole cut-out for the front camera. Powering them is a Snapdragon 732G processor with Adreno 618 GPU and up to 6GB RAM. There’s a microSD card slow for storage expansion.

On the rear is a triple camera setup and the G60 get a 108-megapixel sensor while the G40 Fusion has a 64-megapixel unit. The other two cameras are same for both the phones and consist of an 8-megapixel wide-angle lens and a 2-megapixel macro sensor. The G60 gets a 32-megapixel front camera while the G40 sports a 16-megapixel one.

The duo ships with Android 11 out-of-the-box and runs on a 6000mAh battery. There’s support for 20W fast charging via Quick Charge 4. A fingerprint scanner is located on the back for authentication and Motorola has also retained the 3.5mm headphone jack.

Only one storage configuration is available on the G60 and the 6GB+128GB model costs INR 17,999 (US$ 240). Sale starts from April 27 and ICICI Bank cardholders can avail a INR 1,500 discount as launch offer.

The G40 Fusion is priced at INR 13,999 (US$ 185) for the 4GB+64GB option and INR 15,999 (US$ 211) for the 6GB+128GB. It’ll go on sale from May 1 and ICICI Bank cardholders get a INR 1,000 discount. Both the phones are available in Dynamic Gray and Frosted Champagne color options.

The post The LG Wing gets a huge price cut, now available for $400 appeared first on GadgetMatch.

]]>
Last week, LG announced it’ll entirely shut down its mobile division due to rising losses. It’ll stop making new phones, but existing inventory is up for grabs. It seems like the company is earnest about leaving the past behind and has announced a massive discount on the recently launched LG Wing.

The LG Wing has received a massive price cut of almost INR 40,000 (US$ 532). It was launched for INR 69,990 (US$ 931) in October 2020 but will now sell for INR 29,999 (US$ 400) via Flipkart. Only the 8GB+128GB option was launched in India.

While this may be surprising for readers from other markets, LG has previously introduced such radical discounts in India. Even the LG G8X, which launched for INR 70,000 (US$ 931), was soon available for INR 25,990 (US$ 345). It’s still in stock and available for a discounted price. In fact, you can exchange your old phone in return for further discounts of up to INR 16,500 (US$ 220).

LG Mobile intends to close down by July 31 completely. So, the time span available to grab existing inventory is short. Thankfully, a one-year warranty and five-year service for the LG Wing are mentioned, meaning LG intends to keep the spare and service supply chain active for a long time.

It has also confirmed that these recent phones shall receive active software updates for up to three years. So, if you’re thinking of grabbing a niche phone that looks unique, this is your chance.

If it helps, this writer purchased the LG G8X three months ago for a discounted price and it has turned out to be an extremely solid phone. The Dual Screen setup comes in very handy for Zoom calls, reading, and researching. We’re unlikely to see such radical or experimental ideas anytime soon since most companies are now focused on scaling, in turn, moving away from a niche market.

The Samsung Galaxy S20 FE made its debut in the US last year in both, 4G and 5G capable options. The phone was launched in India after a few months and played a critical role in grabbing the premium market, albeit with a slightly pocket-friendly price.

The 5G option of the phone sports a Snapdragon 865 processor, while the 4G one has an Exynos processor. All other specifications of the phone remain the same. While this is true on-paper, many have been disappointed with the Exynos option and the new phone helps bridge the gap.

Its got a 6.5-inch Full HD+ AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate and Gorilla Glass protection. Powering the phone is a Snapdragon 865 processor with 8GB RAM and 128GB internal storage.

On the rear is a triple-camera setup consisting of a 12-megapixel primary sensor, a 12-megapixel wide-angle lens, and an 8-megapixel telephoto lens. The Galaxy S20 FE 5G is capable of zooming up to 30x and multi-frame night mode. The front has a 32-megapixel selfie camera for selfies.

Backing these internals is a 4500mAh battery with 25W fast charging. It’s worth noting that the 4G variant comes with 15W fast charging, instead. It runs on OneUI 2.0 out-of-the-box and features an in-display fingerprint scanner for authentication.

The phone is priced at INR 55,999, but you can grab it for just INR 47,999 as an introductory price. It’ll go on sale via Amazon.in, Samsung.com, and other partner stores. Color options include Cloud Navy, Cloud Mint, and Cloud Lavender.

Redmi Note 10 Pro Max review: When great becomes greater https://www.gadgetmatch.com/redmi-note-10-pro-max-review-india/ Thu, 25 Mar 2021 09:59:15 +0000 https://www.gadgetmatch.com/?p=120965 A balanced phone that's made for everyone

The post Redmi Note 10 Pro Max review: When great becomes greater appeared first on GadgetMatch.

]]>
Xiaomi launched the most-awaited Redmi Note 10 Pro Max a few weeks ago in India and it’s now available in many other markets across the world.

The Redmi Note series has been a best-seller for the last couple of years. It has played a pivotal role in getting Xiaomi to the number one position in a competitive market like India. It has also cultivated a solid reputation as a brand, and despite numerous anti-China waves, Xiaomi has remained unaffected.

India is a very price-sensitive market that genuinely testes a company’s supply chain. In fact, phone makers started including a case and screen guard with their phones because the buyer saw immense value in a pre-boxed accessories. This practice was largely unheard of in the West and has only recently gained prominence thanks to Chinese phone makers.

My point is, even a hundred rupee difference, which translates to US$ 1.38, is enough to change the buyers’ minds. The Redmi Note 9 Pro series was a near-perfect phone that quenched our thirst for new phones amid the pandemic. Now, Xiaomi is expected to out-do itself. A cycle it has been through many times, always coming out more powerful than ever.

Does the Redmi Note 10 Pro Max continue the legacy? The phone is INR 2,500 (US$ 35) pricier than the predecessor, slightly venturing out in the midrange segment. Is the base price hike worth it? And Xiaomi’s Mi 10i isn’t far away either. Can the new gadget match its expectations? Let’s find out.

It has a 6.7-inch AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate

The camera bump is massive due to the bigger sensor

But the phone is thinner and has a very premium aesthetic

The attention to detail is closer than usual. And, you can feel the difference in your hands.

The Note series has never looked so beautiful

The new design language is called Evol, and the first thing you’ll notice about the phone is its weight. Despite a massive battery, Xiaomi has managed to cut down the phone’s weight by a whopping 17 grams. And, the phone is also thinner, coming in at 8.1mm instead of 8.8mm. We don’t usually consider numbers in our reviews because they can’t convey the real experience. I’ll make an exception here because the compactness really does change the experience.

When the Note series made its debut, the phones were larger than the usual norm. Now, we’re going slightly in the opposite direction, but in a good way. I got the Vintage Bronze variant, and it has a matte finish on the rear. The Dark Night option is the only one to get a glossy back. I personally prefer the black variant, but there’s no doubt that the golden phone looks very enticing.

The camera bump tries to be the main focal point of the phone, and Xiaomi wants you to fall in love with it. And we don’t blame them. The cameras are one of the phone’s prime features and easily attract attention.

One of my favorite phone elements is the subtle cavity that the back offers to the volume rockers and the fingerprint scanner. It looks very pleasing and adds a touch that’s rarely found in this price segment.

The front and back of the Redmi Note 10 Pro Max are protected by Gorilla Glass 5 but the phone isn’t made of metal. The chassis is plastic, and it does an excellent job of trying to be aluminum. Considering the price, I’m not going to crib about a polycarbonate construction. It’s one of the best ways to cut costs, and the end experience remains unhindered.

Streaming, gaming, or reading on an AMOLED display

No matter how good an LCD panel is, you’ll always want an AMOLED. The blacks created by the latter are far more superior and feel natural. The color production is on point, and looking into the screen is always a feast. The best part is, it has a 120Hz refresh rate.

The phone is kept on 60Hz by default, and you can change this from the settings menu. Most importantly, the peak brightness is excellent, and you can see the tiniest of details under direct sunlight. This is a crucial requirement in a hot and sunny country like India, where summers can cross 40 degrees. The phone also gets an IP52 rating for water and dust resistance. So, you’re sorted for the monsoon season as well.

Along with support for HDR10, the display’s color can also be customized as per your liking, ranging from very natural tones to richer, more saturated hues. The punch-hole cut-out is tiny and never distracts you. My key takeaway is, there’s nothing to complain about in the display department, and it’ll be perfect for all types of use.

But… can it game?

Powering the phone is a Snapdragon 732G processor, a top mid-range 4G processor from Qualcomm. Made on the 8nm process, it also powers the POCO X3. It’s more than enough to handle day-to-day tasks, multiple apps, and intensive work.

However, it starts lagging when you throw heavy games like Call of Duty: Mobile. You can feel the phone is struggling to keep up. Genshin Impact was an underwhelming experience, and frame drops are often too common. Considering the on-paper specifications of the phone, I’m confident there’s a lot of space for software-based optimization.

My unit had 8GB RAM, which is supposed to be sufficient. But I did notice something weird — RAM management is unpredictable.

Some heavy apps are loaded without any effort, but basic apps like Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter would often require a fresh start. This can get annoying when you’re in the middle of a workday, and the phone struggles to keep up with basic tasks.

Don’t get me wrong, this is a fairly isolated phenomenon, but it does happen at least a handful of times during the day. Again, I’m sure future OTA updates can fix this, and I hope Xiaomi’s working on it at full throttle.

In a nutshell, I wouldn’t recommend this phone to a hardcore gamer. It can game, but you shouldn’t push it to its limits. Smaller games like Pokemon Go, Zombie Gunship, Alto’s Adventure, and Subway Surfers are extremely smooth and never-ending.

The Redmi Note 10 Pro Max runs on MIUI 12 based on Android 11 out-of-the-box and is filled to the brim with customizations. A lot has been said about the skin and whether you like it or not is a very subjective choice. Although, I did notice lesser notifications from adware like GetApps. The overall experience is far cleaner than before but not as clean as stock Android.

I know this is a flawed comparison, but my point is, Xiaomi is consistently trying to improve the overall experience, and they’re succeeding at it in a way. Bloatware is extremely common now, and instead of marking it as a con, I’d just wish it’s in a controlled manner that doesn’t entirely damage the end-experience.

Is the 108-megapixel camera a gimmick?

Phone makers are in a race to achieve the highest number. Whether it’s the processor benchmarks, camera megapixels, screen-to-body ratio, or even the number of cameras a phone has. In this ongoing race, it’s natural to feel cheated or manipulated. So, how does the Redmi Note 10 Pro Max perform?

Before we proceed, it’s worth pointing out that this phone has a Samsung ISOCELL HM2 sensor, which isn’t the same as the ones found on flagship phones. However, this barely stops the camera from taking stunning images that feel as if they’re indeed from a flagship phone. Thanks to 9-to-1 pixel binning, each pixel is significantly large at 2.1µm.

Pictures during the day are detailed, well saturated, and the auto-exposure is accurate. You may lose some details in varied lighting situations, but this is rarely visible. It tends to struggle slightly in a low-light environment, but that’s expected and isn’t too severe. You can easily zoom up to 2x without any considerable loss, and anything further isn’t recommended. Though, you can just shift to the 108MP mode and collect a lot more information. Honestly, I wouldn’t say the massive megapixels are a gimmick here because it does offer something that nobody else does at this price point.

The wide-angle lens is pretty standard and gets the job done, but it could’ve been better.

Primarily, the pictures often look faded and lack saturation.

And, there’s no dedicated night mode option. So, you’ll be able to use it only during the day.

Surprisingly, the 5-megapixel macro lens gets the most attention on this phone. Xiaomi has finally added a decent sensor that genuinely clicks good pictures and isn’t just sitting there to be a brochure feature. It even offers 2x zoom, and the results are gratifying.

Xiaomi has packed a lot of soft-features like AI Sky Replacement, Clone, and Pro Video modes for casual users. And for the pro-user, there’s the ultimate pro mode. Overall, I can say this phone is Pro Max about photography.

Lastly, can it last a full day on a single charge?

Yes, it can. The AMOLED display really helps push battery life, and you can get even more if you switch to 60Hz. At 120Hz, I’d regularly get a screen-on-time of at least six hours with moderate or usual usage. Go hard on it, and it’ll still last five and a half hours. It managed to get me through the weekdays without having to worry about an electric socket.

The 5020mAh battery takes a little more than an hour to charge fully. 33W fast charging is supported, and the phone ships along with the charging brick. There are better options available, but practically, this is sufficient for pretty much most users.

Is this your GadgetMatch?

The answer is simple. Yes. If you’re looking for a phone that can click excellent pictures, work non-stop during the weekdays, entertain you on-the-go, and have a sleek and elegant design, the Redmi Note 10 Pro Max is for you. The Note series was always about making balanced phones that can do anything, and this phone continues that legacy.

It’s actually a crazy phone because who else is providing a 120Hz AMOLED display, a 108-megapixel camera, and top-notch design for a starting price of INR 19,999 (US$ 275)? Nobody. I don’t suggest this phone to gamers because it has a slightly inferior processor, which may constrain you in the future. But that shouldn’t be an issue for most because if you’re looking for gaming specifically, the market is filled with options. The Redmi Note 10 Pro Max was designed for a wider audience.

realme launched the realme 8 and realme 8 Pro in India and the duo shall compete against Xiaomi’s Redmi Note 10 series. After a sabbatical of three months, brands are actively launching new phones to kick-start 2021.

The pair of smartphones has a super slim body and an infinite bold design with the AG-Crystal process. Essentially, the back is made of plastic. The rear of the phone has realme’s slogan “dare to leap” engraved and it’s massive. realme branding takes a back seat, but the brand is targeting the youth with these gaudy designs.

OnePlus 9R, the third-smartphone in the company’s OnePlus 9 series has been confirmed by CEO Pete Lau merely days before the launch. He added that with the OnePlus 9R launch, the OnePlus aims to expand the smartphone offering to cater to different users.

In an interview with News18, the executive didn’t provide any details of the pricing, but it’s safe to assume the third phone will be for the midrange segment. He further said that the OnePlus 9R is the company’s effort to provide for the core community’s needs.

While the OnePlus 9R 5G specifications have not been detailed, the CEO revealed that the phone would offer features like smooth scrolling, immersive gaming controls, display tweaks, among others. Although, it seems like OnePlus is focusing on gaming as a unique selling point. The company has already tied up with Hasselblad to improve and enhance the OnePlus 9’s camera capability.

The OnePlus 9R will be a premium offering, more high-end than the Nord series, but presumably below the original OnePlus 9 series. Based on preliminary leaks, the OnePlus 9R is said to come with a 90Hz display and feature a 6.5-inch display.

The smartphone is expected to come with a larger display than the OnePlus Nord. Powering the phone could be a Snapdragon 690 processor, which has 5G connectivity options. Rumors also suggest the Snapdragon 865 processor could power it. We’ll have to wait for the official launch to confirm this. Or OnePlus will reveal in the few days left before launch like they usually do.

OnePlus has consistently hiked its flagship price in the last few years, which has been upsetting for many fans. It’s fair to say OnePlus is no longer a small phone maker, struggling to match demand via invites. It’s India’s leading premium smartphone brand, and it’s a good thing that the company is expanding its pricing structure to cater to as many people as possible.

Lenovo Legion 5 AMD review: The perfect entry-level machine https://www.gadgetmatch.com/lenovo-legion-5-review-india-price/ Mon, 15 Mar 2021 06:53:26 +0000 https://www.gadgetmatch.com/?p=120011 Work hard, play hard

The post Lenovo Legion 5 AMD review: The perfect entry-level machine appeared first on GadgetMatch.

]]>
There was a time when Intel was the most recognized and demanded laptop processor maker. Right from powering an ultrathin notebook to a gaming beast, Intel dominated everything. However, AMD has made massive strides in the last few years, and we’re a quick change in market perception. Lenovo has joined the bandwagon, and AMD’s Ryzen 4000H series chips power the Legion 5 laptop.

The Legion 5 is an entry-level gaming laptop. While Intel configurations are available in a few markets, Lenovo has vetoed AMD for the Indian market. The prime question is, can the new Ryzen chips take on a legendary giant like Intel? Besides, the processor is just one organ of the complete machine. What about the GPU? The cooling? The display? Let’s find out!

It’s got a 15.6-inch IPS display with a 120Hz refresh rate

Powered by AMD Ryzen 5 4600H CPU and Nvidia GeForce GTX 1650Ti GPU

The keyboard is backlit, but you miss out on RGB

The body is Phantom Black and feels extremely sturdy

Work hard, play hard

That sounds like a cliche, right? The Legion 5 actually excels at being a very balanced laptop. The construction of the chassis is robust, and despite being plastic, it induces confidence. The design is modern, and the grills look quite futuristic. Just based on looks, the Legion 5 is confidence-inspiring, and there’s no body flex.

Our unit is the most commonly found variant and sports a Ryzen 5 4600H processor, 8GB RAM, 1 TB 5400 hard drive, and 256 GB PCIe storage. The base frequency is 3.0Ghz, across six Zen 2 CPU cores and 12 threads. It has an Nvidia GTX 1650Ti GPU with 4GB of VRAM, but there’s no real-time tracing. While the GPU specs may seem disappointing on paper, the real-world experience is surprisingly better.

Games like Apex Legends, Counter Strike: Global Offensive, and The Division 2 play like a breeze. You can easily expect it to churn out at least 60fps, while older games like Counter Strike: Global Offensive cross the 100 mark without any struggle. Intensive games like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare hovered between 50 and 60. These numbers are quite encouraging because the experience is above average and consistent.

The 15.6-inch display has a matte finish that does a decent job of reducing reflection. The screen is bright enough, the colors are punchy, and it feels immersive. The bezels are thin, and the screen can lay back flat to 180 degrees.

Coming to work, the laptop can literally handle anything you throw at it. In an intense session, I had 16 Firefox tabs, three Word documents, two large Excel sheets, Zoom, and Spotify in tandem, without making me feel the laptop is entry-level. Video editing, rendering, and mathematical compilations are also effortless, albeit with a few more seconds.

A very utilitarian laptop

Gaming laptops generally have terrible battery life because the focus is on maximum performance. Lenovo has taken full advantage of the CPU and GPU, and the laptop can provide three to four hours of usage on a single charge. While this is in range with the competition, the laptop is well optimized to deliver more than four hours if the usage is light.

Despite the above-average battery life, don’t think about traveling a lot with this laptop along. It weighs like any other gaming laptop — a whopping 2.3kg. And the massive size of the chassis isn’t ideal for backpacking. However, this isn’t a shortcoming of the laptop since gaming rigs are designed to be more powerful, not portable.

One of the most things that I loved the most about the Legion 5 is its keyboard. With 1.5mm travel, it may take you a couple of hours to get used to if you’re coming from a paper-thin laptop like the MacBook Air. But once you get the hang of it, there’s no stopping. The keys feel very soft yet tactile, and the numeric pad is convenient.

Lastly, the keyboard layout is also optimum and encourages you to keep going without a break. Our unit has a white backlight, but an optional RGB one is available. The touchpad is fast, accurate, and big enough.

Vents and ports, everywhere

The laptop has many ventilation outlets, and you can hear the fan kick-in when intensive processing is required. The sides, as well as the bottom, are filled with grills, vents, and ports.

The heat doesn’t seep out of the keyboard and precisely gets pushed out via the openings.

This is an important factor because many laptops cannot control the flow and the heat ends up on your keyboard, passively making the experience underwhelming.

It’s also loaded with ports — AC power, Ethernet, four USB 3.0 Type-A, HDMI 2.0, USB-C with DisplayPort, and a 3.5mm headphone jack.

The USB-C port doesn’t support charging, and it misses out on an SD card reader. Being a budget-friendly offering, this one skips a biometric tool like a fingerprint scanner.

The Legion 5 has a 2W Harman speaker that’s way louder than you’d expect it to be. The speaker’s placement is on-point, and the sound output feels like it has surrounded you.

Finally, it’s got a 720p webcam that comes with a physical shutter to protect your privacy. I’d have preferred a 1080p camera since it literally costs nothing, and the world has moved on long ago. I’m not a fan of the webcam as it often makes you look very grainy even in well-lit conditions.

Is this your GadgetMatch?

With a starting price of INR 73,490, I’d like to add that calling the Legion 5 a “gaming laptop” is wrong. It’s a well-equipped laptop that’s gaming-centric. Lenovo has designed the laptop for casual gamers, and it does them justice perfectly. If you’re in the market for a hardcore gaming laptop, this surely isn’t made for you.

I’d say Lenovo has done a fabulous job creating a balanced machine that can get everything done. Work during the day and play hard during the night. Have a few hobby ideas? Go ahead and finish them on the weekend! If you get what I mean, this laptop is for you. It tries to be good at almost everything, and it does it without disappointing.

Many now-basic features like Windows Hello, USB-C charging, Full HD webcam, and RGB keyboard are missing. But if you think about it, are these omissions a deal-breaker?

Apple to start making iPhone 12 in India https://www.gadgetmatch.com/apple-to-start-making-iphone-12-in-india/ Fri, 12 Mar 2021 03:32:00 +0000 https://www.gadgetmatch.com/?p=120040 The demand for iPhones is very high

The post Apple to start making iPhone 12 in India appeared first on GadgetMatch.

]]>
Apple has confirmed it’ll start making iPhone 12 in India soon. The phone maker currently has multiple assembly lines in the country, but they’re yet to churn out the latest iPhone for the local market. Currently, it relies completely on imports.

According to a report in Mint, Apple will start making only the iPhone 12 model in the country while the Pro variants shall continue to be imported from China. Experts suggest that this move will be beneficial for both Apple and the Indian government.

The American phone maker will bypass import duty, giving it an edge in terms of pricing. Secondly, the Indian government wants to encourage local sourcing amid a call to reduce dependence on China-made or Chinese products. Under the government’s production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme, Apple has partnered with Foxconn, Wistron, and Pegatron.

In recent times, Apple has managed to gain a lot of traction in the Indian market due to competitive pricing and local sourcing. It also started its online store after years of wait and intended to open Apple Stores that are not operated by authorized resellers. The Mint report also noted that Apple’s market share in India was 4 percent in the October-December quarter of 2020, a 2 percent rise year-over-year.

However, we don’t expect Apple to officially mark down the price of the iPhone 12 when local production starts. Many older models are already being made in India, and they haven’t seen any significant price change. Though, Apple does double down during the festive season and comes up with extremely lucrative offers that make the phones sell like hotcakes.

The announcements are proof that Apple is finally taking the Indian market seriously. It also has an edge over the others since it can command a much higher premium without affecting sales. For the affordable range, iPhone SE continues to be a hot pick.

India’s new SMS regulation creates havoc for banks, essential services https://www.gadgetmatch.com/indias-new-sms-regulation-creates-havoc-for-banks-essential-services/ Tue, 09 Mar 2021 07:09:05 +0000 https://www.gadgetmatch.com/?p=119840 SMS deliveries have been down for days

The post India’s new SMS regulation creates havoc for banks, essential services appeared first on GadgetMatch.

]]>
Indian telecom service providers started implementing the second phase of a new SMS regulation, disrupting essential services like OTP (one-time passwords), bank updates, and e-commerce messages. This is an industry-wide issue affecting everything, including India’s identity verification program called Aadhaar and the Coronavirus vaccination portal called CoWIN.

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) recently issued a guideline that mandated verifying every SMS and its content before delivery. The process is technically called scrubbing and was implemented on March 8, 2021. As a result, unverified and unregistered SMS messages were blocked by telcos.

TRAI says that scrubbing helps reduce spam or misleading messages that pretend to be from a financial institution. The process helps in differentiating between promotional and transactional messages. To control fraud, a blockchain-based solution is used by telcos to check every SMS’ header and content. If the source isn’t registered, the message won’t go through.

Telcos say that they simply followed the upgrade regulations and that telemarketers and companies are yet to join the formal registration process. Unfortunately, neither the telcos nor the banks have issued a statement to address public outrage.

Every transaction done by a credit or debit card is authenticated on the spot via a preset PIN or SMS OTP in India. For online transactions, a vast majority of users rely on OTPs, and these just aren’t getting delivered. Even SMS updates about a transaction aren’t able to go through. Telcos pushed back and pinned the blame on companies and their lax adoption, which have failed to comply with regulatory standards.

According to BloombergQuint, Axis Bank, one of India’s largest private banks, can deliver only 25 to 30 percent of the total messages. In the meantime, users are suggested to rely on alternative authentication services like Verified by Visa.

The race for megapixels is on and realme in no mood of missing out. The phone maker has showed-off its 108-megapixel camera setup, which will be found on the upcoming realme 8 Pro.

The massive sensor not only produces a sharper image, but also brings the world’s first tilt-shift time-lapse video, starry time-lapse video, and new portrait filters. realme is confident the camera will be able to outmatch the competition. Currently, Xiaomi’s Mi 10i and Mi 10T series have a 108-megapixel camera, but the two sensors are different.

realme has opted for Samsung’s HM2 sensor for the primary camera and it features a larger sensor with a size of 1/1.52″. The larger pixel size ensures better image quality and it supports 9-in-1 pixel binning technology. The brand has shown off a few images that were clicked with the sensor.

For zooming, it supports 3x in-sensor zoom, which processes a 12-megapixel image in the end. Essentially, the sensor will compress the image but retain details that are necessary for the picture. In turn, the algorithm improves accuracy, colors, as well as contrast.

A Starry Mode is also showed-off and it can shoot a video timelapse, using a time-lapse video algorithm based on starry photos. The camera clicks 30 pictures in 480 seconds and compiles that into a one-second video.

There’s also a tilt-shift mode that’ll let you adjust the shape, angle, position, and size of the bokeh effect. Along with this, there are three portrait filters — Neon Portrait, Dynamic Bokeh Portrait, and AI Color Portrait.

The company hasn’t announced the launch date of the realme 8 series. But we know it’ll be coming first to India in March 2021. Finally, realme has reiterated that its “realme number series” naming format for smartphones shall continue focusing on camera-centric innovations.

Xiaomi and realme have often rebranded their phones depending on the market. Now, there’s a high possibility that Xiaomi could launch the Redmi K40, which was recently unveiled in China, as the POCO F3 in India.

As spotted by Stufflistings, the Redmi K40 (model number M2012K11AG) has been certified by the FCC ahead of its global launch as a POCO branded phone. The Redmi K40 series also includes the K40 Pro and K40 Pro+, but their global launch details are yet to be ascertained.

Stufflistings also shared that the same phone has been IMEI validated in India already in a follow-up tweet. Notably, there’s no mention of 5G support here. We shall wait for further details before jumping to conclusions.

The rebranding isn’t surprising because the POCO F2 was actually a rebranded Redmi K30 Pro. And, the POCO X2 was a Redmi K30 in select markets. While POCO and Redmi are now independent brands, it’s clear that they’re fully leveraging Xiaomi’s supply chain.

On the specs side, the phone is expected to have a Snapdragon 870 processor, a 48-megapixel primary camera, and a 4,420mAh battery with 33W fast charging. On the front will be a 6.7-inch AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate.

Early this year, POCO India’s Country Director, Anuj Sharma, confirmed that the brand is considering launching an F-series phone focused on performance and can sport a flagship-grade processor. While the Snapdragon 888 becomes a costly venture for an affordable phone, the Snapdragon 870 provides an ideal middle ground.

Xiaomi Mi 10i review: Master of the midrange https://www.gadgetmatch.com/xiaomi-mi-10i-review-specs-price-india/ Mon, 01 Mar 2021 08:21:00 +0000 https://www.gadgetmatch.com/?p=119273 A near-perfect phone, designed for everyone

The post Xiaomi Mi 10i review: Master of the midrange appeared first on GadgetMatch.

]]>
For years Xiaomi has tried to get a foothold in the premium segment, but it just couldn’t hit the right spot. Despite engineering marvels like the Mi MIX series, it didn’t work. The company has also tried releasing a polished midrange phone under the Redmi branding but couldn’t meet inflated market expectations. Will the Mi 10i solidify its push?

The Chinese smartphone giant got its portfolio sorted at the beginning of 2020 by dividing the three brands — Mi for premium, Redmi for budget, and spun-off POCO into a completely independent brand. Now, Xiaomi has set its priorities straight and aims for the lucrative premium segment, one that’s gobbled by players like Samsung, Apple, Huawei, and to a certain degree, OnePlus, OPPO, and vivo.

The Mi 10i is surely a midrange phone, but it has a lot of expectations to meet. And it’s an important product for Xiaomi since it’s again trying to test the INR 20,000+ range. There’s also tough competition from the OnePlus Nord, Galaxy A51, as well as the realme X3. So, how does Xiaomi’s new offering fare? Let’s see!

How’s the design? Is it comfortable to hold for gaming or streaming?

I’ve got the Pacific Sunrise color option, and it looks phenomenal. The phone has a unique color palette and a premium touch that makes it look much more expensive than it really is. The front and back of the device are protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 5, but it has a very satisfying opaque finish that gives it a very translucent look. It may be glass, but it’ll never attract fingerprints, and that’s one of my favorite things about the phone.

The back has a gradient of cyan or light blue and a mix of orange and pink. While colors or gradients are usually personal preferences and range from person to person, everyone I showed the phone to loved it.

You’ll find the power and volume buttons on the right, the USB-C port at the bottom, and the IR blaster at the top. Like the Mi 10T series, Xiaomi has added a side-mounted fingerprint sensor that’s baked into the power button, and it’s speedy.

The rear has a circular camera module that may remind you of the OnePlus 7T, but the Mi 10i has a slightly different design which actually looks quite good. Due to the bigger 108 megapixel primary sensor, the camera module bulges a lot. But it isn’t annoying because the phone is pretty stable on a flat surface and doesn’t wobble like the Mi 10T series.

Xiaomi has added an IP53 rating for water resistance, so you don’t have to worry about splashes or even light rain. Lastly, the phone retains my beloved 3.5mm headphone jack. I hope Xiaomi continues to add it in future phones.

Lastly, the phone weighs more than 210gms. The weight is easily noticeable, and it does get annoying after extended usage. I prefer a lighter phone because it helps with ergonomics and can withstand falls slightly better.

Is the LCD panel immersive? Does the high refresh rate drain battery?

Looks so good, yeah looks so sweet

The Mi 10i has a 6.7-inch LCD display with a 120Hz refresh rate and Full HD+ resolution. There’s not much to say about the screen because it’s like you’d expect it to be. Xiaomi has a lot of experience with these panels now, and the color reproduction is accurate and vibrant, blacks are deep enough, and the viewing angle is top-notch. However, I feel that it could’ve been brighter. Under direct sunlight, it sometimes becomes difficult to view texts and emails on the go.

Yes, an AMOLED display will have deeper blacks, and that’s where the OnePlus Nord gets a lead. But considering the price difference between the two, Xiaomi smartly opted for an LCD panel and added 120Hz support. Day-to-day tasks are smoothly done, and the overall experience of having a smooth user experience pays off in the longer run. Although, you can adjust the refresh rate according to your preference.

The screen doesn’t suck too much power because it has an automatic variable refresh rate that adjusts according to your usage. So, if you’re watching a YouTube video, don’t worry. The panel knows the playback is at a lower refresh rate and makes the appropriate changes. In the end, you’re with a dynamic display that uses resources only when required. And, if you’re desperate to save power, there’s an option to downgrade to 30Hz as well!

How hard can you game on the Mi 10i? Is MIUI optimized?

The Mi 10i is one of the first phones to be powered by Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon 750G chipset. It is an octa-core processor clocked at 2.2GHz and built on an 8nm fabrication while the graphics are taken care of by the Adreno 619 GPU. This is also a 5G enabled chipset which comes with Qualcomm’s X52 5G modem for 5G connectivity. My unit has 8GB RAM and 128GB of internal storage.

As for the real-life usage and performance, as expected, the device shines at everything you throw at it. Be it a light task or a heavy task; the device is capable of handling it all. Xiaomi has mastered MIUI’s integration with a range of hardware, and the results are visible across all its phones. The Xiaomi Mi 10i runs MIUI 12, which is still Android 10-based (we’d expect Android 11 by now). If you’ve used MIUI before, you know what you’re getting into.

And if you haven’t, don’t worry. The skin is heavily customizable and has a lot of nifty features that are very utilitarian. The RAM management and multitasking was also excellent. Apps stayed longer than I’d expected in the background, and switching between apps did not force reload the content.

All modern games run smoothly on the phone, and there’s barely any lag or stuttering. Though, I did notice some frame drops when playing Call of Duty: Mobile for more than an hour. If you’re expecting any considerable raw performance improvement against the Snapdragon 765G, don’t. The difference is negligible, and you won’t realize it in real-life unless you start mining Bitcoins on your phone.

Most importantly, how’s the 108MP camera? Is it as good as the Mi 10T series?

Just like the Mi 10T Pro series, the Mi 10i gets a 108 megapixel sensor, but it isn’t the same one as the Mi 10T Pro. It comes with a 1/1.52-inch sensor, and Xiaomi claims it’s more compact than the HM1 sensor, which reduces the camera bump. Pictures are usually taken in 12-megapixels via binning technology, retaining details, natural color, and accurate contrast.

One of my favorite things about the sensor is its capability to capture excellent pictures with HDR. The algorithm can cleverly process the image to ensure there’s no excessive noise correction. The sensor can detect colors precisely and adjust exposure even under direct sunlight. The 108-megapixel mode can be accessed in the camera app with more options. The amount of detail captured by the camera in 108MP mode is truly incredible.

Low-light pictures are slightly disappointing because they often over-sharpen details, and the result looks quite artificial. The night mode compensates for this, but it mostly makes the image brighter and doesn’t necessarily optimize it.

Accompanying the primary sensor is an 8-megapixel wide-angle lens that isn’t that wide and struggles to capture detail. The quality degradation is easily visible, and this is definitely a cost-cutting measure for the company. There’s also a 2-megapixel macro and portrait sensor, which are now commonly found on almost all Xiaomi phones. It’s worth noting that the phone doesn’t have optical image stabilization, so if you’re into video, this definitely isn’t for you.

Despite the criticism, I’d say the phone has the best cameras you’d find in this price range. The competition is far away, and the 108 megapixel becomes a deal-breaker for many. Most of the issues I’ve encountered are software-based, and Xiaomi can fix them via OTA updates.

How long can it last? Should I invest in a 5G phone right now?

The Mi 10i 5G has a 4800mAh battery with 33W fast charging, and Xiaomi includes a 33W charging brick in the box. It took me an hour to charge it from 0 to 100, and that’s definitely a good deal. Thanks to Adaptive Sync (variable refresh rate of the screen), the phone can deliver a screen-on-time of more than seven hours in one go. Sometimes, it’ll even go up to eight hours under comfortable situations.

India is yet to roll-out 5G on a commercial scale, and the expected launch timeline from telcos currently stands at 2022. The government is yet to hold a spectrum auction, so there’s a lot of bureaucracy involved before we get to experience it. In my opinion, practical coverage of 5G is still two years away. 5G should be no reason for you to buy this phone.

Is this your GadgetMatch?

If you’re looking for a phone that excels at everything, then this phone is for you. The design honestly feels flagship grade and reeks premium, the processor is brand new and packs a punch, the cameras are above average and can go the extra mile if you’re a photography enthusiast, and lastly, the battery backup is optimum.

Gamers won’t be disappointed because the chipset is capable enough, and the phone barely heats up. This phone is made for everyone and does not stick to any particular niche. Considering the starting price of INR 21,999 (US$ 303), the Mi 10i is an easy recommendation. And even though we can’t enjoy 5G this year, it’s great to see the market get flooded with options. After all, the trickle-down effect will soon give us affordable 5G phones.

The post Xiaomi announces three new manufacturing plants in India appeared first on GadgetMatch.

]]>
Xiaomi announced it’ll be opening three new manufacturing facilities in India to boost its local presence and supply chain. Two of them shall be dedicated to smartphones while the third ones for smart TVs.

Xiaomi’s India Head and Global Vice President, Manu Kumar Jain, said that 99 percent of its smartphones sold in India and 100 percent of its televisions will now be manufactured within the country.

In a briefing to GadgetMatch, he said that Xiaomi has been assembling phones and TVs in India for a while now. But many components are still imported, and the company is trying to reduce this as much as possible. Xiaomi has partnered with DBG India, and its plant in Haryana is already functional.

The second facility will be set up in Tamil Nadu by Chinese electronics maker BYD. The two plants are strategically located to ensure the supply chain runs smoothly across the country. For the smart TVs, Xiaomi has tied up with Hyderabad-based television manufacturer Radiant.

The Chinese phone maker has already tied up with Foxconn and Flex for smartphones and Dixon Technologies for televisions. Jain even went on to say that a vast majority of the phone components that include printed circuit board assembly (PCBA) and sub-boards, chargers and battery, back panels are domestically manufactured in the country.

Jain also proudly said in the briefing that Xiaomi now employs 60,000 people in India via its many facilities, retail units, and back-end operations. Xiaomi’s investment in India isn’t surprising because it has been serious about the market for years and has solidified its standing as an indisputable leader.

The Indian government recently kicked-off a billion-dollar scheme to encourage local sourcing. Also dubbed Production Linked Incentive (PLI), the government is ready to offer subsidies and tariff reliefs for companies that are open to localization. The program has worked wonders for companies on the electronics front, and thousands of jobs are being generated.

Despite competition from Samsung, realme, OPPO, and vivo, the company has largely remained unscathed. However, the brand is still in warm waters due to geopolitical instability between India and China. The anti-China sentiment has affected many Chinese players like Huawei, TikTok, Alibaba, and more. But Xiaomi and other mobile phone markers have avoided controversy by amalgamating with the local market and the workforce.

]]>
The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and MapmyIndia have joined hands to develop an indigenous alternative to Google Maps. Indian developers are being encouraged to become self-reliant, and the government is open to partnering with local firms.

ISRO has signed an MoU with geospatial technology company CE Info Systems, which MapmyIndia owns. According to MapmyIndia CEO and Executive Director, Rohan Verma, the services will combine the power of the company’s digital maps and technologies with ISRO’s catalog of satellite imagery and earth observation data.

Elaborating about the partnership, ISRO in a statement said, “The collaboration will enable them to jointly identify and build holistic geospatial solutions utilizing the earth observation datasets, “NavIC,” Web Services and APIs available in MapmyIndia, “Bhuvan,” “VEDAS” and “MOSDAC” geoportals.”

India has developed its own GPS alternative called the NavIC, and it’s now operational for commercial use. Many new chipsets from MediaTek and Qualcomm support NavIC, along with American GPS and Russian GLONASS.

Thanks to the partnership, ISRO can leverage its data for analysis, meteorology, and geo-observation. On the other hand, MapmyIndia has accurate data about millions of villages, towns, and roads. The two can collaborate to make a detailed solution that’s hyper-local.

Unlike Google Maps, MaymyIndia says it does not have an advertising business model to protect the user’s privacy. The business model is based on delivering digital map data products, navigation solutions, mapping APIs, automotive technology platforms, geospatial analytics, and GIS solutions.

Redmi 9 Power review: Powerbank that doubles up as a phone https://www.gadgetmatch.com/redmi-9-power-review-india/ Fri, 12 Feb 2021 05:01:01 +0000 https://www.gadgetmatch.com/?p=118555 Unbeatable battery

The post Redmi 9 Power review: Powerbank that doubles up as a phone appeared first on GadgetMatch.

]]>
Reviewing a mobile phone has become relatively straightforward because brands like Xiaomi are releasing a new phone every month. While the successive launch of new phones has slowed down in the last few months, I’m yet to review one of the last phones of 2020 — the Redmi 9 Power.

The Redmi 9 series continues its predecessors’ legacy and aims to provide maximum features at the most affordable price. In fact, Xiaomi’s own portfolio is often confusing for the customer. The Redmi 9 Power is a brand new offering that’s supposed to be pushed to the extreme.

The Redmi 9 Prime is priced slightly lower, so what’s different about the Power? Plenty. Let’s find out!

It has a 6.5-inch LCD with a water-drop notch

The back has a grooved design that’s very grippy

For authentication, it gets a side-mounted fingerprint scanner

So far, all the usual Xiaomi features. So, what’s new?

The phone looks like a very conventional affordable phone consisting of polycarbonate construction. However, it feels very solid in hand. There’s no flimsy plastic or poor build, and I managed to drop it quite a few times, without any visible damage. Keep in mind, the plastic body is helping reduce the phone’s overall weight.

The outside of the phone may not be very amusing, but the internals indeed are. The phone packs a 6000mAh battery that supports 18W charging, so you’re practically never going to run out of juice. The phone easily lasts two days with heavy usage, and I often ended up using it as a power bank for my headphones, smartwatch, and even secondary phone (albeit very slow).

If you travel a lot, this phone can be an ideal secondary phone. It rarely runs out of charge, and you can afford to deplete your battery in low network regions. Another useful application of the phone is for studying online. Students can attend a full day’s lecture with the display switched on without needing a charger.

The Redmi 9 Power takes a little more than two hours to completely charge the battery but provides an insane screen-on-time of more than nine hours. No wonder the phone is called Power.

Designed for entertainment

IU 😍

The phone has a 6.5-inch display that’s bright enough, produces accurate colors, and offers decent viewing angles. At this point, Xiaomi has figured out the affordable display formula, and all their budget phones have consistent results.

Although, when paired with the massive battery, this phone is perfect for non-stop entertainment. Watch as many YouTube videos as you can, or maybe even binge-watch a show on Netflix. There’s a chance the show will end, but the phone still chugs along. The phone is available in 64GB and 128GB internal storage options, which is expandable via a microSD card.

Powering the phone is a Snapdragon 662 chipset, which is a slightly boosted sibling of the Snapdragon 660. It incorporates a faster Adreno 610 GPU, but don’t expect a radical change in gaming experience than the Redmi 9 Prime, which an Helio G80 processor powers. The phone comes with 4GB RAM only, so it’s safe to assume that it isn’t designed for hardcore gaming.

MIUI runs smoothly on the phone and enhances the user experience to a great extent. The Android skin is conveniently customizable based on preference, and day-to-day tasks are a breeze. I tried Call of Duty: Mobile, Asphalt 9, and Sniper Fury on the phone, and all of them ran smoothly. The phone rarely heats up unless you’re pushing it to the peak with performance and charging.

A reliable set of lenses

It has a quad-camera setup that consists of a 48-megapixel primary camera, an 8-megapixel wide-angle lens, a 2-megapixel macro sensor, and a 2-megapixel depth sensor. Together, the cluster gives many options to users, and MIUI’s add-ons further extend this. In a nutshell, the pictures range from good to decent, with nothing exceptionally good or bad.

Daylight pictures are capture a lot of detail but look dull due to inaccurate color saturation. In many pictures, the highlights are blown out, further making the image look unsatisfying. The same highlights issue is also observed in low-light shots.

Indoor pictures are pretty good, but it does feel like the phone needs a lot of manual attention to click an image. Xiaomi has made phones in the past that have sported brilliant cameras for the price. The wide-angle sensor works as you’d expect it but sometimes manages to distort the edges. Thankfully, the macro and depth sensor are uniform across all Xiaomi phones.

Coming to the front, there’s a 13-megapixel shooter located in a water-drop style notch. The selfies are on point and look appealing. You can toggle on/off the beauty mode based on your requirement or even tune it. The AI-based portrait mode is pretty good actually and detects edges accurately.

Is this your GadgetMatch?

If you’re looking for a phone that never runs out of juice and keeps you away from the wall as much as possible, this phone is perfect for you. I’ve also suggested the phone to many folks who’re using a flagship phone but would love to have a secondary option at an affordable rate. The Redmi 9 Power can seamlessly complement an iPhone or a Note 10.

With a starting price of INR 11,999 (US$ 165), the phone carves a perfect balance of features that make it a must-have. The display is enjoyable, the performance is above average, an unbeatable battery, and the goodness of MIUI. If you have a slightly flexible budget, the Redmi Note 9 is also a good pick that offers a much-improved design.

Twitter finds itself stuck in an odd situation — comply with government law or continue self-moderation? Who decides what can stay up on the platform and what cannot? The new challenges of governing social media has received a lot of attention globally, and the debate has intensified in India recently.

Following a massive protest demonstration in Delhi on January 26, the Indian government asked the American social media giant to take down 257 accounts, allegedly spread misinformation, and incited violence. The country recently enacted three new farm laws that have received considerable opposition in some parts of the country.

After the notice was sent, Twitter briefly suspended many of those accounts at the government’s behest but reinstated them a few hours later due to public outrage. The accounts included media publications like The Caravan as well as handles supporting the farmer protests.

Many view this as a crackdown on dissent and feel the government is trying to silence genuine opposition. However, the government asked Twitter to take down another 1,200 accounts on February 4, justifying that security agencies flagged them due to their close association with Khalistan’s separatist movement.

Government vs. Twitter

India’s Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeiTY) has sent a non-compliance notice to Twitter. Critics say the government uses its power to suppress freedom of speech and the Twitter takedown sets a precedent for the future.

Twitter chose to remain defiant, issuing a public statement that its employees’ safety was a top priority but that the tweets must continue to flow. In fact, it went all-in and countered the government by saying it has acted on several blocking requests from the government in the past 10 days. But it declined to take any action on news publications, journalists, activists, and politicians as it believes that doing so “would violate their fundamental right to free expression under Indian law.”

And this is where the government lost its patience. It was quick to say that Twitter “is welcome to do business in India” but must respect local laws. As a slight nudge, the ministry opened an account on Koo, India’s local alternative of Twitter, and posted a “koo” there. This prompted many to believe that a Twitter ban could be near the horizon; alas, this is just speculation.

India soon issued a very strong-worded statement, “Due to India’s conducive business environment, open Internet and a firm commitment to the freedom of expression, Twitter as a platform has grown significantly in India in the last few years…Twitter, as a business entity working in India must also respect Indian laws and democratic institutions.”

What does the future hold?

The discussion now revolves around content moderation and maintaining its integrity. Should a private for-profit company be allowed to censor or monitor what kind of content is being posted online? Can we let governments dictate policies? Especially when this gives them an easy option to crush dissent and offers more control.

The Indian government has also accused Twitter of  “differential treatment” in the US and India. The platform was quick to remove then-President Donald Trump when Capitol Riots were underway but did little to curb the flow of misinformation when thousands had seized India’s Red Fort as a sign of protest.

In the end, Twitter said it had permanently blocked over 500 accounts and moved an unspecified number of others from view within India. It remains to be seen how Twitter and government move forward, but one thing’s clear — a new wave of nationalism wants a local Twitter alternative.

With more than 700 million internet users, India is a huge and important market for global tech companies. Every company wants to lead the market due to its incredible size and potential. TikTok lost the market forever, but Reels was able to grab the opportunity. Can Twitter afford to go up against the government, from a business point of view?

India’s PUBG alternative FAU-G is a national embarrassment https://www.gadgetmatch.com/indias-pubg-alternative-fau-g-is-a-national-embarrassment/ Wed, 10 Feb 2021 06:40:13 +0000 https://www.gadgetmatch.com/?p=117640 It practically feels like an interactive video

The post India’s PUBG alternative FAU-G is a national embarrassment appeared first on GadgetMatch.

FAU-G is a new game that intends to take on battle royale games like PUBG Mobile, Mobile Legends, and even Fortnite. But, the game is loosely based on the India-China border clashes of 2020, in which 20 Indian soldiers were martyred.

Following the conflict, India banned many Chinese apps and vowed to become more self-reliant. The clashes were met with massive outrage in India because the anti-China sentiment was consistently rising ever since the origin of Coronavirus was traced back to the Chinese city of Wuhan.

For the general public, the virus’s origin and China’s border aggression created a deadly combination. India’s Narendra Modi-led government has a soft corner for nationalism, and it wasted no time to hit back in its own way. Within a few days, India started its campaign to reduce dependence on China and become Atmanirbhar or self-sufficient.

India bans or restricts Chinese companies

TikTok was the first one to get crushed. Followed by hundreds of others. And then, it was time for PUBG Mobile. Indians love the game and were caught in a strange predicament — play a Tencent (Chinese) distributed game or stand with your country? The answer was clear. PUBG Mobile went off the app stores, and a few die-hard folks who couldn’t part ways with the game found turnarounds like VPNs and external installations.

This where a new game comes into the picture. An Indian developer based out of Bengaluru saw an opportunity, just like Instagram spotted an opening with Reels when the TikTok ban was announced in the US. Indian developers tried to grab the TikTok moment with indigenous apps, but Reels rained over their party and sealed their fate once and for all.

PUBG Mobile craze gets replaced by FAU-G

But nobody could bridge the PUBG Mobile gap quickly because making a game isn’t child’s play. However, Indian studio nCore Games has bigger ambitions and announced it’ll be launching a PUBG Mobile alternative called FAU-G (Fearless and United Guards) soon. In Hindi (one of India’s official languages), fawji literally means a solider, and the developer smartly ripped off the name from PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds and added a nationalist twist to it.

FAU-G was supposed to launch in November but got delayed to December and then January. Finally, the developers chose the auspicious day of January 26 for launch, a national holiday because it celebrates its 75th Republic Day. The game had more than four million pre-registrations, Bollywood celebrities like Akshay Kumar endorse the game, and it was supposed to land a mighty punch to our violent neighbor, a message that we don’t need them.

The game has finally arrived, and I’ve played for an hour. Yup, I’m writing an in-depth review based on one hour of experience. Hold on, though, don’t judge me yet!

Gameplay

The game is straightforward. It only has a single-player story mode right now, and there are no guns, grenades, or vehicles. According to the campaign mode, you’re a soldier in the Galwan Valley, where Ind0-China clashes took place in 2020. You’re separated from your unit and are supposed to make your way through enemy camps and find your comrades.

This is where it gets more interesting because you’re expected to fight just with fists or a melee weapon. As soon as you’re near an enemy, just keep smashing the hit button, and you’ll be fine. There’s no strategy or aim required to win because the game’s difficulty level is close to zero. AI bots just stand close to you and wait for you to crush them like flies.

The soldier needs to rest near a fireplace to warm up every minute or so. Galwan Valley is one of the harshest battlefields globally due to altitude and ultracold climate, so they incorporated this challenge as a gameplay feature. It’ll help you regenerate your health.

The melee weapon is currently restricted to a wooden club that has nails attached to it. Similar stop-gap weapons were used in the real Indo-China clashes because the two countries want to avoid an escalation and restrict their armies from firing live bullets. To make things as realistic as possible, the developers decided to start with a melee weapon.

A lot of bugs are yet to be squashed, and FAU-G stopped responding a couple of times. The graphics are underwhelming, and the map is too small. You’ll most probably never open it more than once.

But, how does it fill PUBG’s void?

Well, it doesn’t. The game was clearly conceptualized to cash on the immediate PUBG: Mobile ban. They announced the game first and then thought of brainstorming how they’ll accomplish a PUBG killer. Right now, the game only has a single-player mode that’s called “Tales from the Galwan Valley.” The game mentions a 5×5 team deathmatch mode and free for all (possibly the battle royale), but they’re not available as of now.

Thankfully, the developers thought of earning some revenue from the game and added a store. It has skins for the character and melee weapons, and they can be bought using gold or silver coins. The gold coins have to be purchased, while the silver coins are earned as you progress in the game. There’s also an “Honour Road” battle pass that’ll let you make some free in-game cosmetic goodies.

As it stands, the game is far from being called a game as it lacks minimum gameplay. nCore Games says it’ll be releasing more features, maps, weapons, and game-modes in the future, obviously. But it’s safe to assume that the game failed to capitalize the PUBG Mobile vacuum.

Nobody expected FAU-G to be as perfect as the incumbents, but we did expect a slightly enjoyable game that can challenge international studios. In turn, we’ve received a hyper-national interactive video that gives little joy and maximum cringe.

Even if the developer adds a ton of features in the next few weeks, the initial damage is done. The game has a rating of just 3.0 out of 5.0 on the Google Play Store, and it isn’t available for iOS yet. The launch euphoria is now gone, and users realize there’s no use in wasting storage after a game that barely works.

What does the future hold?

FAU-G isn’t the first Indian alternative to disappoint. As soon as the TikTok ban was announced, many local developers tried to seize the moment by creating clones. But none of them are close to bridging the gap, and Instagram Reels has successfully taken over the mantle.

A prime reason behind their failure is their vision. Their goal is to become India’s PUBG Mobile or TikTok, and in the process, forget those giants are successful because they’re unique. They offer something nobody does, and that’s their forte.

Many Indian start-ups like Razorpay, Ather, Cred, Instamojo, and Khatabook are successful because they focus on the product, the idea, and its vast applications. These companies don’t need a marketing campaign around “being Indian” to attract users.

nCore Games still has a lot of time and should focus on the game as a product, not a PR campaign. We don’t need dialogues that indirectly suggest what’s happening in the game is a real depiction of what happened at Galwan Valley.

When I’m shooting at someone in a game, they’re just another player for me and not a Chinese soldier trying to cross the Indian border. And this is a thin line we must maintain. Younger generations should understand the real harshness and consequences of war. A game is a simulation, and we’re turning it into a toxic dose of unimaginative propaganda.

The bad news for nCore Games is that PUBG Mobile could return to India after severing distribution ties with Tencent. FAU-G can survive if it ramps up development and releases features soon, or PUBG Mobile never makes a comeback.

PayPal to shut-down domestic payments operation in India https://www.gadgetmatch.com/paypal-to-shut-down-domestic-payments-operation-in-india/ Sat, 06 Feb 2021 04:46:04 +0000 https://www.gadgetmatch.com/?p=118137 Will focus on cross-border transactions

PayPal will shut down its payments operations in India this year. The company has announced it’ll undertake a restructuring exercise from February 6, informing its merchants that it intends to terminate contracts by April 1, 2021.

The decision isn’t shocking because PayPal lost the Indian payments market long ago. Instead, the company plans on focusing on its cross-border trade business. Indians send a lot of remittance from other countries, and with the world gradually recovering from the Coronavirus pandemic, the demand is bound to grow.

They added that the company has looked at ways to “protect business and optimize growth here since early days of the pandemic” and “decided we are best placed focusing on enabling cross-border trades and exports.”

PayPal was a payments options on many Indian online apps like MakeMy Trip, BookMyShow, and Swiggy. Simultaneously, the service is very relevant in the US and other markets due to Venmo (P2P transfers) and its payment gateway service on third party merchants. Adding to this, the user can also use the account as a digital wallet.

However, PayPal never really took off in India due to a cumbersome sign-up process and government compliance issues. While its technology had an edge, PayPal became irrelevant in India when UPI (Unified Payments Interface) was launched by a consortium of Indian private and public sector banks.

The technology made P2P transfer possible across any major bank in India. The interoperability offered by UPI is considered the best in the world. Why would one need a digital wallet when your bank account is directly accessible within a minute? The transfers are also real-time; hence there’s no settlement time or banking hours. This push ended the dream of many companies similar to PayPal, including Alibaba-backed Paytm.

TikTok parent ByteDance said it has decided to slash staff in India after a ban was imposed on the app.

“We initially hoped that this situation would be short-lived…we find that has not been the case,” ByteDance wrote in the memo to staff in India, seen by Reuters. “We simply cannot responsibly stay fully staffed while our apps remain un-operational…we don’t know when we will make a comeback in India.”

The Indian government banned TikTok and 58 other Chinese apps in 2020 due to rising border tensions between them. It’s now certain that the Indian government has no plans of taking back the restrictions.

The letter does not mention how many out of its 2,000-plus employees in India TikTok will let go. Sources emphasized that most of the Chinese internet companies have already dismantled their local teams. TikTok had committed to spending US$ 1 billion in the region.

The Indian government has always maintained that these Chinese-owned apps posed a security risk to the nation. The companies have publicly stated that they are willing to cooperate with the government for a middle-ground. However, even games like PUBG Mobile were banned and won’t be making a comeback anytime soon.

Even WhatsApp had to go through two years of excruciating audits and data localization compliances to start WhatsApp Pay in the country.

Apple reports its best ever quarter in India, sales double https://www.gadgetmatch.com/apple-reports-its-best-ever-quarter-in-india-sales-double/ Thu, 28 Jan 2021 08:26:00 +0000 https://www.gadgetmatch.com/?p=117721 iPhone 12 is an astounding success

The post Apple reports its best ever quarter in India, sales double appeared first on GadgetMatch.

In 2018, I wrote a pretty long article on why Apple cannot grab a foothold in the Indian market. Back then, it had less than one percent market share while Android had the other 99 percent. Fast forward to 2021, Apple has announced its Q1 2021 results, and not only has it shipped more iPhones than ever globally, but it has also managed to double its sales in India.

While answering an analyst’s question during an earnings call, Apple CEO Tim Cook said that Apple’s India business “roughly doubled” in the December quarter. More than 1.5 million iPhone units were shipped in the country, taking its market share to a whopping 4 percent.

It’s worth noting that according to IDC, India’s top smartphone maker is Xiaomi, with a share of almost 25 percent. But Apple’s rise is considered special because the Cupertino-based company focuses only on premium offerings that usually cost much more than Xiaomi or realme’s top offerings.

The iPhone 12 series sells like hotcakes, and the iPhone SE 2020 has found a special spot in the country. Apple says many factors have led to the rally, like its online store, which was opened last year. The smartphone maker has also tied up with assemblers like Foxconn, Pegatron, and Wistron to ramp up facilities.

Additionally, it also plans to open directly operated Apple Stores in the country, whose unveiling may have been hindered by the Coronavirus pandemic. But the company has confirmed that it still intends to continue with the plan and is working on expansion.

Apple announced its strongest ever quarter, with US$ 111.4 billion in revenue. The company’s profits rose by 29 percent YoY to US$ 28.76 billion, driven by growth in all of its product segments. iPhones contributed US$ 65 billion while services like Apple Music, Apple TV+, Apple Arcade, and more brought US$ 15.7 billion.
